How to Stay In Contact and stay Calm During Social Distancing

It was not too long ago that our everyday life was extremely dynamic and even turbulent. The work rush and evening plans which we often had to arrange weeks in advance. We could meet our friends for dinner outside our homes, have a quick coffee with a colleague, take our children to the cinema and much more. We took most things for granted, and only appreciate them now when we have to avoid them for safety reasons. Citadele’s Head of Retail in the Baltics Anna Fišere-Kaļķe offers her advice on keeping your sanity and not losing contact with those you love during social distancing.

Use digital tools to stay in contact

We have never appreciated the opportunities afforded to us by technology as much as we are now. With one click, we can be united with our loved ones living on the other side of the world. A few tips which will help you stay in contact:

  1. Create separate groups for your family and friends on the social media platform you use the most—Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts, Microsoft Teams, etc. You should bear in mind that each platform has specific participant limits for video chats (WhatsApp—16; Messenger—up to 50 participants, with six being shown on the video; Skype—50; Zoom—100 on calls no longer than 40 minutes; Google Hangouts—10);
  2. Every week, decide on a day for your video call;
  3. To make your calls more fun, you could plan a theme for each call—costume party, craft night, cooking together or taking part in a quiz. For quizzes, you can also use the Houseparty app.

Try out new things

We have been given the time and opportunity to learn and try out new things. There are various online courses and classes available, many of which are free. For example, you can see whether your favourite restaurant is offering online cooking courses, where you can learn how to cook something delicious and support the restaurant during this difficult time. Or you and a group of friends could take part in an online quiz.

You and some friends or family members can take part in a fun social media challenge, or make your own—your family could have a 30-day exercise challenge, challenge your friend to ten pushups, or just post a picture from your childhood.

Polish up your language skills or learn a new language, for example by using Duolingo or Babbel. Your mood will also certainly be lifted by physical activity. To help you stick to your plan, exercise remotely with your friends and challenge each other. If you can, exercise in the fresh air—a 30-minute walk or doing exercises outside on the balcony will give you a big dose of positive emotions and charge you up for some productive work.

Create your own “break room” moments

For most of us, this is our first experience of working from home full time. It is only natural if we miss interacting socially with our colleagues in the break room. It is important to maintain these moments, so call a colleague simply to chat rather than to discuss work. Plan a work video party or take part in a remote activity together.

We are all in this together

Don’t forget that, instead of being stuck in four walls, we are safe at home. It is natural to feel isolated and distant from others. It can be worrying to read the news every day and see all the negative headlines. But these headlines shouldn’t take up your whole day. If you feel like there is too much going on, it is better to listen to a podcast rather than reading the news.

We are all experiencing this strange time together and, when we can get back to some of our normal activities like meeting our friends and family, we will appreciate them much more.
