Citadele Bank

Changes to payment address format from November 1, 2026

Published on

From November 1, 2026, payment standards will change the way beneficiary addresses must be provided in payment messages. This will speed up payment processing, reduce errors, and ensure the payments reach the right destination smoothly and without delays.

For payments made in the online bank, no extra action is required. Minor updates will be visible in the payment form, but nothing major – fields should be completed as displayed.

For payments submitted via file import or gateway, these changes require attention.

What is changing

From November 1, 2026, payment messages that include an address must use one of two accepted formats:

  • structured address – all address parts (street, building number, postal code, city, country) are provided in separate fields.
  • hybrid address – city and country are provided in structured fields, and the rest of address information is provided in free unstructured format containing maximum 140 characters.

In both formats, city and country must always be provided as separate structured fields. A fully unstructured address (all details in free text, with no structured city and country) will no longer be accepted.

How this applies by payment type

  • SWIFT (international) payments – where an address is required, it must be structured or hybrid. Payments with fully unstructured addresses will be rejected.
  • SEPA and SEPA Instant payments – in these payments the address information remains optional. If address information is included, it must be structured or hybrid, otherwise the address information in payment will be ignored and it will not be delivered to the beneficiary.

Supported file formats from November 1, 2026

  • ISO 20022 XML – for convenience, both pain.001.001.03 and pain.001.001.09 formats continue to be supported. Switching to the newer format is not mandatory, but address information in either must meet structured or hybrid requirements.
  • FiDAViSta – this format will be allowed only for EUR payments to Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. As FiDAVISta format does not support structured address fields, any address data included in FiDAViSta files will be ignored and it will not be delivered to the beneficiary. For payments to other countries, ISO 20022 XML must be used.

What we recommend

  • Review how addresses are currently populated in payment files.
  • Confirm with the ERP or accounting software provider that structured or hybrid format is supported and included in payment messages.
  • If FiDAViSta is used for EUR payments outside Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, a transition to ISO 20022 XML should be planned before November 1, 2026. For more information on changing the payment file format, the ERP or accounting software provider should be contacted.

Countries where an address is already required

For payments to countries where an address is already mandatory, this continues as before – only the format is changing.
